Year 2

Year 2 2022

Welcome to Year 2

The classes in Year 2 are called Armstrong and Jupiter.

The Teachers in Y2 are Miss Brooks and Mrs McGurk.

The Teaching Assistants are Mrs Birks, Mrs Coyle and Mrs Sheppard.

This term (Autumn 2) our learning challenge is "Who lives in Africa?"

We are excited to learn to all about the different animals that we might find living in Africa and exploring what these animals need to survive. We will also be learning about the 7 different continents and 5 oceans of the world and using this to describe the climate in Africa and compare this to England.

You can find out more about our topic by clicking on the knowledge mat for this term.

We will be learning about

  • Where Africa is in the world by locating it on maps and naming the different continents and oceans around the world. (Geography)
  • Traditional African tribes and comparing our life with a child who lives in Africa. (Geography)
  • How different habitats are suited to different animals. (Science)
  • Different lines, textures and patterns in the style of African art. (Art)
  • How to use IT to create media? (IT)
  • African dance. (PE)
  • Why does Christmas matter to Christians? (RE)
  • All about me! (PSHE)

At the end of the week we will be posting a blog and photographs on Class Dojo to tell you all about the exciting things we have been doing in school that week. This will give you the chance to talk to your children about their learning.

You can help your children at home by

  • Exploring different world maps and identifying the different continents and oceans.
  • Continuing to read at home, at least 4 times a week.

Now the children have settled into Year 2, we will be setting a short writing task each week. We will be looking for great sentences, using capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, good letter formation and most of all interesting word choices. If there are any issues with accessing pens and paper, please let the teachers know and we can provide this.

We will now have some focus spellings each week which we will be learning in class. We will send this list home, however we will not be testing these in a formal way.

We recommend downloading the White Rose 1 Minutes Maths App so children can further practise their maths skills at home.

We will be giving Dojo's for any learning competed at home so please do send us photographs. These will all be included in the weekly blog post.

Our PE days are Monday and Tuesday. Please can children ensure they have got a PE kit to get changed into on Mondays and come dressed ready for PE on Tuesdays.
