This term (Summer 2) our learning challenge is "Why do we like to be beside the seaside?"
We will start our topic with a fantastic sand castle competition, where we were finding out how much water is needed to make the perfect sand castle.
We will learn and discover lots about the seaside such as;
- Where are our nearest seaside places?
- What are the features of the seaside?
- How is South Normanton different to the seaside?
- What were seaside holidays like in the past?
- What is a rockpool?
- What lives in a rockpool?
Over the next few weeks we will be looking at a range of different micro-habitats including rockpools and even designing our own micro-habitat. In design and technology, we will be exploring a range of different joining techniques so that we can create our own sea creature. In Geography we will learn about the different human and geographical features of the seaside as well as comparing South Normanton to a seaside location. In History we will be comparing seaside holidays past and present and making our own seaside puppet shows!
You can find out more about our topic by looking at the knowledge mat for this term (coming soon).
In English, we will be focusing on an adventure narrative called The Secret of Black Rock. We will also be learning all about Grace Darling and writing a biography of her life.
In Maths we are learning about time; where we will be telling the time to O'clock, half past, quarter past and to and to the nearest 5 minutes. We will also be learning about statistics where we will explore a range of charts and graphs and interpret the information. Finally we will be learning about position and direction where will be describing movement and turns using vocabulary such as left, right, clockwise and anti-clockwise.
During this term we will taking a trip to the different place of worship in Derby, so we can explore different faiths and their buildings alongside our RE unit. We will also be learning about this in class.
As a special treat for working so hard all year, we have also arranged an adventure day at Pleasley Vale.
Please look out for any additional dates for transition and visits to the junior schools.
